When your gate stops opening at 7 a.m. on a Tuesday, the person who shows up matters as much as the parts on the truck. Our San Jose crew is small on purpose. Five technicians, one dispatcher, and a shared refusal to leave a job until the gate cycles smooth. Most of us have worked on gates in the South Bay for over a decade, through wet winters that rust hinge plates and summer heat that cooks circuit boards in east-facing boxes. We know which neighborhoods see salty air drift from the bay and which Almaden Valley properties fight tree root heave under the track. We’re part of the Relay Home Co. family, and we hold ourselves to the same spec every day: written price first, honest diagnosis second, fix that stays fixed.
Styles & brands we work with

Our People
Nico Alvarez, Owner & Lead Gate Technician
Nico founded Calder Gate Repair San Jose after spending years watching gate companies sell replacements for repairs that needed forty minutes and a limit switch adjustment. He moved to San Jose in 2003 and has been taking apart gate operators ever since. He’s factory-trained on LiftMaster, FAAC, BFT, Linear, Viking, Ghost Controls, DoorKing, Elite, and Mighty Mule, which means when he opens a control box, he already knows what the wiring should look like. Nico runs every warranty callback personally before assigning it. When he’s not on a job, he’s usually at the Rose Garden testing a rebuilt motor or teaching one of the younger guys how to bench-test a capacitor.
Elena R., Senior Installer
Elena has been installing and converting gate systems in Santa Clara County since 2011. She’s the one you want on a full operator replacement, the kind of job that involves new mounting plates, fresh conduit, and re-running photo eye lines so they actually align. She handles most of our cantilever slide gate work in Campbell and Willow Glen, where narrow side yards leave little room for error. Elena came up through commercial access control before joining us, so she reads wiring diagrams the way most people read a menu. On her days off, she restores old Vespa scooters and applies the same patience to stubborn chain drives.
Marcus T., Service Coordinator
Marcus is the human who answers when you call (669) 666-6859 at 2 a.m. because your gate is stuck open and your dog has opinions about it. He’s the reason nobody in San Jose ever reaches a voicemail at our shop. Marcus keeps the dispatch board, tracks the live arrival times our technicians send from the road, and makes sure every customer gets their written price confirmation before a truck rolls. He knows the neighborhoods by name and can usually estimate drive time to Evergreen versus Berryessa without looking at a map. Before joining us, Marcus spent years in Bay Area logistics, and it shows in how tightly our schedules run.
Jordan P., Apprentice Technician
Jordan joined the crew two years ago through a trade program and has turned into the most thorough diagnostic note-taker we’ve ever had. He handles a lot of our first-visit troubleshooting alongside Nico, testing batteries, checking limit switches, and photographing every component before and after repairs so customers see exactly what changed. Jordan lives in Japantown and rides his bike to most calls when the weather cooperates. He’s currently studying for his gate operator certification and has already memorized the voltage tolerances for every major brand we service.
One Standard, Every Job
None of us are interested in being the cheapest gate repair shop in San Jose, because cheapest usually means a used gear in a used housing and a receipt that fades before the warranty does. What the team shares is the Calder standard, and it applies whether we’re swapping a capacitor on a Mighty Mule in Blossom Valley or diagnosing a Viking board in Silver Creek. You get a written price before any work starts. The number on the invoice matches the number you approved at the door. If the repair fails within 365 days, Calder returns at no charge under the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and that free second visit is included with every repair, not offered as a favor. Every technician arrives background-checked, in uniform, with a trackable arrival time. You’ll get before-and-after photos and a digital invoice you can pay from your phone. That’s the Relay Standard, and it’s the only way this crew works.
