If your Mighty Mule gate has a cracked weld, a bent gate bracket, or a hinge that’s tearing away from the post, you’re in the right place. We stock and install Mighty Mule-compatible welding and fabrication parts across San Jose, and most bracket or hinge replacement jobs run between $185 and $420 installed, depending on the damage and the gate’s weight. We can typically get to you the same day you call, because we keep the common Mighty Mule failure points on the truck.
Most owners discover this problem the same way: the gate starts sagging, or it scrapes the driveway, or the opener sounds like it’s fighting a losing battle every time it cycles. You walk out, look at the hinge, and see a crack running through the metal or a weld that’s finally let go after years of San Jose sun and daily use. That’s the moment the gate stops being a convenience and starts being a liability, because a gate that’s half-attached to its post is one hard shove away from coming down.
Which Mighty Mule Models This Applies To
Mighty Mule’s lineup spans the MM series (MM260, MM360, MM462, MM572), the FM series (FM200, FM350, FM500, FM700), and the newer MMX series. The good news: the welding and fabrication concerns we’re talking about here aren’t motor-specific. They’re about the physical steel the motor is trying to move. Whether you have a single swing gate on a welded steel frame or a dual gate with a fabricated drop rod, the failure points are the same: hinges, gate brackets, post plates, and the occasional cracked weld on the gate frame itself.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people miss: Mighty Mule gates are lighter-duty than commercial operators like DoorKing or LiftMaster, which means the gate leaf itself is often thinner-gauge steel. That’s fine for daily residential use, but it means a weld repair has to match the material thickness or you’ll burn through it. We see do-it-yourself welds on Mighty Mule gates where someone used a 220V welder on 14-gauge tubing and blew holes straight through. The right approach is matching the heat to the metal, not just laying down more bead.
As for OEM versus aftermarket: Mighty Mule doesn’t sell welded hinge assemblies as a standalone part for most models, so you’re usually looking at either fixing what’s there or having a replacement fabricated to match the bolt pattern. We do both. For hinges and brackets, a quality aftermarket piece in the right gauge steel outlasts the original in San Jose’s dry heat, because the original hardware is often powder-coated mild steel that rusts once the coating chips. A good fabricator can build you a replacement bracket in 11-gauge steel with a heavier weld than the factory ever used.
One note up front: Calder Gate Repair San Jose is an independent service provider. We’re not affiliated with Mighty Mule, but we work on their openers constantly, and Nico Alvarez has been repairing and fabricating gate hardware in the San Jose area for years, from Almaden Expressway homes to commercial properties near Santana Row.

Signs Your Mighty Mule Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- The gate sags toward the latch side. This usually means the top hinge has worn or the weld at the hinge plate is stretching. The gate’s own weight is pulling the metal apart, and the gap at the latch post gets wider every week.
- You hear a grinding or popping noise when the gate moves. That’s the sound of the hinge pin binding in a worn hole, or a cracked weld flexing open and closed under load. It’s metal on metal, and it won’t heal itself.
- The opener struggles or stalls halfway through the cycle. The motor is working harder because the gate’s geometry has shifted. A Mighty Mule MM360 was never designed to lift a gate that’s dragging on the ground, and the motor will burn out faster than the weld will.
- Visible rust staining or flaking around the hinge or bracket. In San Jose we don’t get a lot of rain, but we get years of UV and temperature swings that crack powder coating. Once the coating fails, the steel underneath starts corroding and losing thickness.
- The gate post itself is moving or cracked at the base. This is the worst-case scenario. The hinge is fine, but what it’s bolted to is failing. That’s a fabrication issue: either a new post plate or a full post replacement with proper footings.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For San Jose homeowners, here’s what you can expect to pay installed. A single gate hinge replacement with fabrication runs $165 to $240, depending on whether we’re reusing the existing bolt holes or drilling fresh ones. A post plate repair or reinforcement runs $220 to $320. A full hinge and bracket replacement on both sides of a single swing gate runs $300 to $420. If the gate frame itself has cracked welds that need repair and reinforcement, that’s typically $280 to $450 depending on how many spots need attention and whether we’re adding a gusset plate for strength.
Every job includes the part, the labor, the grinding and prep work, and the weld cleanup. We quote a written price before any work starts, and the number on the invoice matches the number we agreed to at the door. There’s no surprise line item for “miscellaneous welding supplies.” If the repair fails within 365 days, our 365-Day Done Right Promise means we return at no charge and make it right. That’s stated in writing on every job.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s where we’re honest, because we’ve fixed a lot of DIY attempts. You can safely check the hinges, look for cracks, and measure the gap at the latch. That’s useful information to have when you call us, and it helps us give you an accurate quote over the phone.
What you should not do is fire up a welder on a gate that’s still attached to a Mighty Mule opener, because welding sends electrical current through the frame and can fry the control board in about three seconds. We disconnect the opener and capacitor discharge before we ever strike an arc. You also shouldn’t hold a gate up with a jack while you work, because a sharp shift in weight can bring the gate down on you. A single swing gate can weigh 200 pounds or more. That’s a hospital trip, not a Saturday project. If the part that’s failed is structural, call us at (669) 666-6859 and let us handle it. The estimate is free.
FAQs
With the factory hardware, expect 5 to 8 years before the powder coating fails and the steel starts to degrade. San Jose’s dry climate actually helps here, because you don’t have coastal salt air accelerating the rust, but the UV exposure still breaks down the coating over time. A properly fabricated replacement with heavier-gauge steel and a quality finish can run 10 to 15 years. Call (669) 666-6859 and we’ll tell you honestly whether yours can be saved or needs replacement.
In most cases, a cracked weld can be ground out, re-welded, and reinforced with a gusset plate so it’s stronger than the original. If the metal around the weld has thinned from corrosion, replacement may be the smarter option. We’ll show you what we’re seeing before we start, and the price is in writing before anything turns.
Most hinge or bracket replacements take 60 to 90 minutes on site, including prep, welding, and cleanup. A full post plate repair or multiple-weld job can take two to three hours. We give you a real arrival time you can track, not a four-hour window.
We keep the common failure items on the truck: gate hinges in multiple sizes, post plates, and bracket stock we can cut and fit on site. If your gate needs something unusual, we fabricate it in our shop and come back to install it. Either way, you’re not waiting on a backordered Mighty Mule part. We also stock parts for LiftMaster, Ghost Controls, and DoorKing, so if your other gate or a neighbor’s opener needs attention, we can usually handle it the same trip.
If your Mighty Mule gate is sagging, popping, or the opener’s working too hard, call Calder Gate Repair San Jose at (669) 666-6859. We’ll put a real person on the phone, give you an honest read on what’s failing, and get the job priced before we ever show up. Written price first, done right, guaranteed for 365 days.
