We stock and install Linear-compatible welded gate components across San Jose, with most welding and fabrication jobs running $220 – $480 installed depending on the part, material thickness, and how much disassembly the frame needs. If your Linear gate has a cracked hinge bracket, a snapped weld on the operator mount, or a bent frame rail from a car bump, we can usually fabricate and weld the replacement same day and have your gate swinging again within a few hours.
Most San Jose homeowners discover the failure the same way: the gate starts dragging on one corner, the opener strains and reverses, or a visible crack appears at a stress point near the hinge or operator post. Sometimes it’s a loud pop followed by the gate sagging hard to one side. That sag is the tell: the weld wasn’t just cosmetic, it was load-bearing.
Which Linear Models This Applies To
Linear is the brand on thousands of swing and slide gates across San Jose neighborhoods, from Almaden Valley to Willow Glen and up through Berryessa. The welded components we fabricate match Linear’s SL, SW, and APeX series operators most often, but the real compatibility question isn’t the operator model. It’s the mechanical parts the operator drives: hinge brackets, gate frame rails, operator mounting plates, and post brackets.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people don’t know: Linear operators are fairly tolerant, but the bolt pattern and plate dimensions changed between the older Linear line and the post-2016 APeX series. If your gate has an older Linear unit, the original mounting plate may have a 4-bolt square pattern, while newer APeX units use a wider 6-bolt rectangular footprint. We match the fabricated plate to your exact operator generation, not just your gate width. When we replace a welded bracket, we don’t assume: we measure the post diameter, the hinge offset, and the operator travel before cutting anything.
We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Linear or its parent company. But we work on these systems daily, which means we know which OEM replacement brackets are worth the money and where a properly fabricated steel equivalent does the same job for less. We stock common universal plates and raw steel stock on the truck, and we’ll tell you honestly if an OEM part is the better call for your setup.

Signs Your Linear Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- Gate sags toward the latch side when fully open. A worn or cracked hinge weld lets the gate lean progressively further out of plane. The operator has to push harder to close it, which accelerates wear on the motor and the drive arm.
- Visible crack lines radiating from a weld bead. These are fatigue cracks from years of cycling. They start hairline and widen with every open-close cycle. If you see rust staining around a weld, the crack has already gone through the surface coating and water’s getting in.
- Opener mounts feel loose and rattle when the gate moves. The bolts may be tight but the plate they sit on has cracked at the weld. Tightening bolts won’t fix a broken plate – it just closes the gap temporarily while the crack keeps growing.
- Kickback on the operator arm at the end of travel. When a fabricated mount flexes because a weld has failed, the operator arm binds and then releases. You’ll hear a metallic knock right as the gate reaches open or closed position.
- Fresh scratches on your driveway concrete near the gate’s leading edge. That’s the gate losing height. The hinge side is still welded solid; the latch side has dropped enough to scrape. Left alone, the operator arm takes over supporting the gate’s full weight, which Linear’s gearbox was never designed to do.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In San Jose, most Linear welding and fabrication repairs on residential gates land between $220 and $480 installed. The range breaks down roughly like this:
- Weld repair on an existing bracket (no new steel needed): $220 – $300 depending on whether we need to disassemble the hinge or operator mount to access the joint properly. Two-sided welds on a post bracket take longer than a single accessible seam.
- New fabricated bracket or plate, cut and drilled on site: $280 – $420. Includes steel cost, cutting, drilling, welding, priming, and touch-up paint. Stainless steel runs higher than mild steel, and we’ll quote the difference before cutting.
- Frame rail repair or reinforcement (bent or cracked gate rail): $350 – $480. Takes longer because we have to support the gate, straighten or reinforce the rail, and often re-level the hinge points while we’re there.
Every quote is written before any work starts. You know the number, the parts, and the time estimate before the first weld arc fires. And every weld we make carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if that weld fails within a year, we come back and make it right at no charge. No fine print, no service-call fee, no argument.
DIY or Call Us?
This is the part of the page where I have to say it plainly: welding on a gate that’s under spring or operator tension is dangerous, and the hazards aren’t obvious until they go wrong. A gate that’s sagging is holding stored weight in the frame. Cut the wrong weld or unbolt the wrong bracket first, and that stored energy releases fast. People have lost fingers and worse when a gate frame let go mid-cut. High amperage welding near a live Linear control board can also fry the board if the ground path jumps the wrong way.
What you can safely do: kill power to the operator at the breaker, inspect the welds visually, take photos of any cracks, and measure the gap under the sagging corner. Then call us at (669) 666-6859. We’ll look at your measurements over the phone, give you a ballpark, and set a real arrival time. If it turns out the weld is fine and the problem is a limit switch or a bad capacitor, we’ll tell you that too. We don’t weld things that don’t need welding.
FAQs
On a properly installed San Jose gate, a quality weld on a steel bracket should last 10 – 15 years. The weld itself rarely fails first. What fails is the surrounding steel where it’s thinned from rust. In San Jose’s coastal-influenced air, especially on the west side and anywhere within a few miles of the bay, untreated mild steel brackets rust through faster than inland neighborhoods. We prime and paint every fabricated part, and we’ll recommend stainless when your location suggests it’s worth the extra cost. Call (669) 666-6859 for an exact quote based on your gate’s location and condition.
Often, yes. If the crack hasn’t propagated beyond the weld zone and the surrounding steel is still full thickness, we can grind out the old weld and lay a fresh one. The welded joint will be as strong as the original plate. If the crack runs into the base metal or the bracket has rusted thin, replacing the part is the honest call. We’ll show you what we see and put the decision in writing.
Most single-bracket weld repairs are done in 90 minutes to two hours from arrival. A full fabricated bracket replacement, including cutting, drilling, welding, and paint, typically runs two to four hours. Frame rail reinforcement on a badly bent gate can take half a day. We’ll give you a firm time window when you book, and you can track our arrival live from the link we send.
We stock common universal steel plates, raw stock, and hinge brackets sized for most Linear swing and slide gate frames. If your gate needs something unusual, like a stainless bracket for a coastal San Jose property or a custom offset to clear a retaining wall, we’ll measure on the first visit, fabricate in our shop, and schedule installation within a few days. The quote covers the fabrication and the second trip, so there are no surprise add-on charges. Call (669) 666-6859 and we’ll check our truck inventory for your specific setup.
